What is the purpose of a concrete paver sealer? Does it really protect the paver? Does it change the appearance of the paver? Is it really necessary? If you have all these questions in mind, read on and you will be happy to find the answers in the following lines!

Concrete paver, with or without sealer?

Bolduc pavers, slabs, and wallstones are entirely developed and manufactured in Canada. They are therefore designed to withstand freeze/thaw cycles and the rigors of the Canadian climate. So do you really need to apply a sealer on your pavers? The answer is no, it is not mandatory because concrete products are already highly durable and resistant. However, it must be said that the addition of a sealer can be judicious in certain cases.

Benefits of a sealer

There are four reasons why you should apply a sealer on concrete products:

  1. Provide additional protection from the weather and maintain its natural appearance
  2. Enhance its color
  3. Give it a wet look
  4. Facilitate its maintenance

The protection and aesthetic aspects of sealers for concrete pavers and slabs are interesting, but it is in terms of maintenance that you can benefit the most from these products. Indeed, sealers create a barrier that slows down the penetration of contaminants into slabs and pavers. This protective layer will make them more resistant to grease and food stains, as well as those caused by rust, dead leaves, and other organic matter. It is therefore wise to use a sealer if there are many hardwood trees in your area or if you like to cook outdoors.

Be careful, these products do not prevent the appearance of stains; they facilitate their cleaning because instead of penetrating deep into the concrete, they will remain on the surface. However, it is still very important to clean stains as soon as possible when they appear.

What type of sealer should you choose?

This type of sealant is divided into two categories: penetrating sealers and film-forming sealers. The choice of one or the other depends on the desired characteristics. A penetrating sealer, as its name indicates, penetrates deep into the slabs and pavers. It is used to prevent stains and facilitate maintenance. It has a life span of 5 to 10 years and is a better long-term choice. A film-forming sealer has a more aesthetic function; it will improve the color of the pavement by giving it a wet look. Since it does not penetrate as deeply into the concrete, its life span is 3 to 5 years.

How to apply a sealer?

You will need to wait at least one year after installation before applying a sealer as efflorescence. The whitish deposit of mineral salts that appears on concrete products. Should be gone. Once this time has elapsed, you can move on to the next step. However, if the slabs or pavers are installed in an area that is highly exposed to organic matter such as dead leaves or other elements that could stain them, it is recommended that you apply a sealer 30 days after the installation of the polymer sand.

The first thing to do is to clean your paved area thoroughly because once the sealer is in place, you will not be able to remove the embedded dirt. To find out how to do this, consult the article How to clean your paver in the spring. You’ll find tips and tricks for removing stubborn stains and the cleaning products to use. Then simply apply the sealer of your choice following the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations.

Now that you know a little more about sealers, you can decide whether or not to apply one depending on how you will use your paved area and the elements surrounding it.
