What is the difference between pavers and slabs?

January 18, 2023

Back to articles

Both are concrete products with the same appearance once installed. They withstand winter conditions and are generally offered in a variety of colors, shapes and textures to create unique outdoor designs. But what exactly is the difference between pavers and slabs? Here are the key characteristics of each to help you to make the right decisions for your next landscaping project!

Pavers

Pavers are thicker than slabs of similar size and are specially designed for driveways. Because they are between 60 and 80 mm thick, they are more expensive, but sturdier to be able to handle the technical requirements that are dictated by their use.

Slabs

Slabs are thinner and less costly. They are normally between 40 and 65 mm thick and are ideal for residential walkways. Slabs are often used for patios, garden paths and the contours of inground pools.

Some people may decide to install pavers for an outdoor terrace. There isn’t any real limitation in that regard. However, the opposite isn’t true: slabs cannot handle heavier loads like cars.

In either case, the concrete products must be properly installed with specialized equipment according to the rules of the art to ensure a long service life. We recommend that you work with professional landscapers and can recommend trusted firms.
